From a youtube comment to this
tune about Warszawa
Mural in the coolest corner of indie Warszawa...
We turn the ugliest bits of our past into something approaching pretty…
At the height of every summer, Warszawa
is hit by the maddest storms… almost
every night, this kind of doom beckons…
and she shrugs it off, year in,
millennium out
A beach bar on the poor, wild, eastern bank of the river…
A crumbling statue
of Christ praying
over a crumbling
Fiat 126, BMW 316
and a Zuk van…
A bar just off Chmielna Street, the second poshest
street in Warszawa… Looks like a nuclear bunker, smells
of piss, but after a few frozen vodkas feels like home
The Old Town… twice rebuilt since WWII,
therefore younger than me
Rozycki Market,
in the most
dangerous part of
Warszawa, sells mainly
wedding fashions...
now I get the security
I lived in this pre-war block a few years back…
I left, my dreams stayed well put
Murals outside the
Philosopher’s Kitchen
I took some magic
mushrooms at a wedding
once… riding home in a
cab, I swear I saw this
bloody great giant
statue wave to me
In Jutrzenka Skate Park Mrs Maria will cook you a meal you will never forget…
the best
pierogi in town, the best cucumber soup in the history of mankind
A Praga milk bar… just like my momma
made it… and just like my momma, the
serving ladies dealt plenty of racist
abuse to minority customers
(in this case, Roma Gypsies)
VIP flowers… damn right.
The building which
houses the Warszawa
Chopin Rooms. Also
home to the Fine
Arts Academy… Would
Frederick have
approved?
River tram
crossing the
Vistula…
Koneser Vodka Factory
in Praga… home to
various alternative art
galleries…

bring on post-modernism
The
“official”
Vietnamese
Cultural
Centre,
Warszawa’s
Praga
district…
A Tibetan
gallery in
the Old
Town…
place full
of magic
Only Poles could put the
Moroccan embassy in a
historic building with a
statue of Mary Magdalene
wedged in a glass-covered
alcove over the door…
I keep thinking of buying a proper camera, but if my phone
takes pictures like this of the worst tenements in town…
Graffiti outside the French Institute section of Warsaw University… oh, the wit
Alleyway in New World Street, the poshest bit
of Warszawa… forget that, we’re just 50 metres
from heaven
